Uhhh..,use AEI in a word please. It might mean the same sound as I mean 
when I used AI.

How distinct? As completely seperate syllables or as a one syllable
dipthong where the two sounds blend together? If the former, does that mean
that /ae/ never represents a dipthong?

OK. But you're talking about the transcription manner, correct? When spoken
it would still be the dipthong /ei/, right? It would be nice to keep a few
of what look like dipthongs.
