One, the state that the two dialects had arrived at before they became aware of each other seems to me too different for one to be a descendent of the other, or even for them to be near relatives. Two, adopting either assumption about them would seem to put undesirable limits on efforts to further develop them -- unless it were decided to deliberately modify both to make them more similar.
