Yes, they're from the Encyclopedia. I just forgot to label them before m= y connection expired. They both come from ST3 when T'Lar formally calls Sp= ock's father "Sarek, child of Skon, child of Solkar" at the fal-tor-pan on Moun= t Seleya. Note that she did not say "son of", although she named only his = male progenitors (that they are indeed his father and grandfather is confirmed= by the Encyclopedia). We don't know how a woman would be addressed -- as "c= hild of" her father and grandfather, "child of" her mother and grandmother, or= a mixture of the two? =20 For that matter, is this even the normal formal naming pattern, or a form= ula connected specifically with the fal-tor-pan which, as T'Lar reminded ever= yone, hadn't been attempted "since ages past"? : ... Vorick, Tuvok, the ensign from TNG "Lower Decks" (Torek?).=20 :=20 : I'd like to point out, in case this hasn't been mentioned, that Torik=20 : and Vorik are the same actor.=A0 Torik has much shorter hair, and is at= =20 : least a year or two younger (at least the actor is). Obviously, since the episode was filmed a year or two prior to Voyager.=20 However, in the Trek "universe" they're different characters with differe= nt names (Vorick and Taurik) -- which is what we're discussing here. The fa= ct that they're portrayed by the same actor (what's his name?) is irrelevant= for our purposes. =20 It is interesting that TPTB chose not to give either one a traditional /S= / name. Maybe /S/ names for males are out of fashion in the 24th century.=20 They're not nearly as common as they were some 80 years before in the TOS= era, the legendary time of "cowboy diplomacy". =20 : Hmmm.=A0 Has anyone been to my Vulcan names page yet?=A0 I think it all= ows=20 : for most if not all of the names mentioned above. Yes, I just looked at it. If it's the one at=20 http://www,geocities,com/Athens/Olympus/9087/vulnames,html I only saw four names on your page (Sarek, Tuvok, T'Pel and Surak) aside from a partial alphabet. Is there another section I missed? =20 Have you tried writing all of these canonical names (i,e. the TV episodes= and movies) using your alphabet? Don't forget the unusual ones like Xon, Sak= onna, Selar, Saavik and even Valeris -- which, although Klingon in origin, shou= ld be possible to write after a fashion (with a Vulcan "accent" as it were). D= on't forget about the geographical names as well to test your system. If I ha= ve time, I'll try to come up with a canonical list of those too. : -Sorik -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ----- Steven Boozer The University of Chicago Library s-boozer*uchicag= o,edu
