The system seems to have a syllabic basis, and there is reason to
think that Vulcan at one point used a syllabary rather than an
alphabet. The nearly circumscribing arc, and the fact that it is for
writing names, reminds of Hieroglyphic cartouches. Perhaps this is a
survival into modern times of an ancient form of writing as a Vulcan
equivalent to the cartouche, or the modern Terran signature.
