Blocky Writing Mark Gardner Sat, 19 Sep 1998 04:10:01 -0700 Previously I announced to this group that despite our 18 years of research into Vulcan languages, we had come to the decision long ago to mostly ignore any Vulcan writing systems in favor of a transliterated alphabet for easy reference and translation. Some newer people or occasional readers may have missed this. The "blocky writing" previously mentioned in a thread here is very interesting. We are almost inclined to consider it like a type of computer/scanner readable "barcode" containing the name and identity code of the vessel. If this is not the case, then perhaps it is the abbreviation for something like "Vulcan Diplomatic Courier Vessel" plus the name Surak. It is fairly obvious that the characters are exaggerated in a type of "super bold" style in order to be visible from a distance. The normal characters in writing would likely be much "thinner". Let's discuss this issue and see if we can't come to some sort of agreement on how to interpret these characters. This is something nobody appears to have researched until now, so it is exciting to look at and theorize about. Mark R. Gardner Vulcan Language Institute
