I should point out that my current preferred position is:

Zvelebil  Epstein   Brit. Eng.
i-i:         i      bIt-bEAt
u-u:         u      pOOl
e-e:         e      bEt-bAit
o-o:         o      bOtch-bOUGHt
a            a      bUtter
a:/ah      aa/ah    bArter

where capital letters represent (roughly) the vowels being used to
demonstrate, dashes separate varying pronunciations (and varying
transcriptions) of what seem to be classified as one sound, and
slashes separate variant transcriptions. The latter either both occur
(in the case of original) or should be chosen between (in either
case?).
