That's not the same distinction as BritEng "butter"~"barter." A
similar AmEng comparison would be "butter" to "bother" -- though, of
course, not quite.

The <a> in AmEng "barter" is almost identical to the <o> in BritEng
"botch" -- at least, as well as I can hear it.
