Transcription & Writing Vulcan Mark R. Gardner Thu, 09 Jul 1998 20:42:25 -0700 In our Old High Vulcan, we settled on a system that is simple as well as has a mathematical pattern. There are 27 "letters" in our Vulcan language (3x3x3=27), which individually or in combination cover any and all sounds we've heard. They are as follows (not in Vulcan order): VOWELS: A E I O U (they can be combined & Y is ONLY a consonant) CONSONANTS: B CH D F G H K KH L M N P R S SH T TH V W Y Z ZH (NO C, J, Q or X) There is no need for any international characters, accent marks or typographical marks except for the hyphen and the apostrophe. I don't know if this is of any use in this discussion for the other dialects of Vulcan language but it fits ours perfectly. This is something for you to consider -- it may or may not work with the ZC Vulcan. We did once consider using "X" for the "Kh" sound (as in the Slavic languages) but we decided it could be a possible point of confusion for those learning to speak. The digraphs, of course, represent a single Vulcan letter which has no corresponding "Federation Standard" letter. We do agree strongly that it would be impossible to use actual Vulcan script within the limits of computer and online usage. Mark R. Gardner Audree McCann Vulcan Language Institute
