Voting & Language Mark R. Gardner Wed, 08 Jul 1998 21:22:18 -0700 I think we missed some of the postings, so we are unclear of what this voting issue is 100% about. We will abstain. On the issue of translations, those of us at the Vulcan Language Institute will defer to the ZC Vulcan experts in translating the strips of contemporary Star Trek materials into Modern Vulcan. If, in the future, some of these strips delve into historical Vulcan themes, we would ask that the language used there be Old High Vulcan. Seems reasonable to have Surak and comtemporaries speak their own language. We have always liked movies where the characters speak their own language, for example, German, Japanese or Italian in WWII movies, instead of all English. The same goes for Vulcan speech: We would love to see it in the native tongue whenever possible, whether it be Old High Vulcan, "ZC" Modern Vulcan, or any of the several lesser known Vulcan languages we've only had occasional exposure to in fandom. Also, we feel, that with his obvious racial variation, probably meaning from a far distant part of Vulcan we rarely see, Tuvok probably speaks a "regional dialect" in addition to Modern Vulcan.
