Re: [Fwd: Vulcan Language] Saul Epstein Mon, 8 Jun 1998 21:20:12 -0500 I happened to discuss our situation with my father this evening. He suggested that the two dialects could have different ages and/or purposes. If, as seems likely, Mr. Gardner's Vulcan was primarily inspired by dialogue in "Amok Time," it might make since for it to be an older and ceremonial language. Which would leave room for ours to be pretty much what we've thought: a formalized version of a trade language in wide use in Surak's time. Both could then conceivably have important roles in Vulcan society. The only drawback to this solution is its awkwardness. While realism probably demands a diversity of languages spoken by Vulcans, the practical limitations of the situation probably only allow one, just as there is only on Klingon. -- from Saul Epstein locus*planetkc, com www,jccc,net/~sepstein "Surak ow'phaaper thes'hi thes'tca'; thes'phaadjar thes'hi suraketca'." -- K'dvarin Urswhl'at
